Free-Paws Heelwork to Music / Freestyle Classes - West Yorkshire
Q. What is Heelwork to Music?
A. Heelwork to Music is a collection of moves performed by a dog and handler (that can be put to music if you want to take it further).
Free-Paws Heelwork to Music classes were set up by myself and Karen to encourage people to try something new with their dogs. Heelwork to Music/Freestyle is an alternative sport to the more energetic sport of Agility and takes its roots from traditional Obedience.
Heelwork to Music is Dog Training with Zing!
All breeds are suitable for Heelwork to Music/Freestyle. We have many kinds, from Poodles to Akitas and from Crossbreeds to Bedlingtons who come each week to learn something different. We don’t believe in forcing your dog to work – you’ll find no choke chains, no pushing or pulling and no harsh treatment in our training. We use positive, reward based methods that will bring out the best in your dog. Many of our handlers who are new to training have been amazed at how quickly their dogs take to this kind of training – and with such enthusiasm!
When you join we will discuss your dog with you, find a starting point designed to build on their strengths and develop new skills in both of you within the field of Heelwork to Music/Freestyle. As you begin to learn these new skills so the bond between you and your dog will develop even further.
For those of you who are new to it we will show you how to teach your dog to weave through your legs, bow, walk backwards – and that’s just the beginning! As you progress you’ll learn to teach your dog some more amazing moves by shaping. What’s “shaping”? Come and find out!
Nowadays there are three classes a week covering a range of abilities; from teaching the basic spins and weaves etc. for those who just want some fun, to helping with choreography for the ones who have competitions in mind. Handlers are guided through the different levels and given advice on anything from how to teach your dog to walk sideways to what to do to pass Progress Awards and how to go about entering competitions.
